4th Annual O' What a show - All that glitters!

"Happy 80th Birthday Beta Pi!" was the opening to the 4th Annual O' What a Show - All That Glitters! The celebration began with a welcome from President Elva Garcia. Event Coordinator Mellie Smithwick invited the sell-out-crowd of 372, to toast Beta Pi by holding up their red rose cupcake and singing Happy Birthday to Beta Pi. Kayla Hinojosa, grandniece to Garcia, walked the runway dressed as a birthday cake holding a birthday gift and balloons.

President Garcia was celebrated and recognized for her 50 years of membership in Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Beta Pi Chapter. Smithwick presented Garcia with a dozen red rose on behalf of the chapter members. Garcia took to the runway flanked by Beta Pi members adorned with red boas. It was a celebration worthy of Beta Pi's 80th birthday!

O' What a Show - All That Glitters! featured eight boutiques from local Alice merchants. Showcasing their fashion was Kid's Kloset, owners Esmerald Perez and daughter Lydia Escobar; Especially for Me, owner Janie Munoz; Style & Grace, owner Gracie S. Lopez; Cosa Bella, owner Irene Govea; Little Divas, owner Karina Lopez; Krazyy Cowgirls, owner Stephanie Benavides; and Wedding Lace Bridal & Tuxedo Rental, owner Renee Padraza. Each boutique dressed models who took to the runway from a glittery gold entrance. Beta Pi is forever grateful to each owner and boutique for their continued support. Remember to "Shop Your Local Merchants. Shop Alice!"

Vednor shopping was a highlight of the evening. Doors opened at 6:00 p.m., at the KC Hall, Alice, for vendor shopping. Setting up shop was USBorne Books, Director Sue Carden of Corpus Christi, Texas; Origami Owl Custom Jewelry, Berti Almendarez, Independent Designer, Calallen, Tx; Especially For Me Boutique, Janie Munoz, owner, Alice; Love in a Basket, Delia Benavides and Lucy Munoz, owner, Alice; The Pink Box (Homemade baked goods), Liana Garcia, baker, Bishop, Tx; Neva's Bowtique - Custom Hair bows, Neva Perez, owner; Little Divas Bowtique, Karina Lopez, owner, Alice; and Paparazzi Jewelry, Shantel Deiorio, consultant, Corpus Christi, Tx.

Members and guest enjoyed a sit down dinner, a silent auction and a prize drawing. Texas Sound-Systems DJ MaLo, Marc Lozano, DJ, Alice, provided dinner and runway music. Lozano also assisted Garcia with the showing of a video of Beta Pi's last four years.

The room was buzzing with excitement at the end of the evening when the grand prize, donated for the fourth year, by Mark Alaniz, general manager of Love Chrysler Dodge Jeep, was selected. Emilia Sosa, an educator at Alice High School, won the use of a vehicle for a weekend from Love Chrysler Dodge Jeep. Member Cristelia Gonzales sold the winning ticket. Prior to the drawing, the silent auction and prize drawings were awarded.

The Beta Pi Chapter collected new books for the Tri-County Texas Retired Teacher Association Children's Book Project in exchange for a prize drawing ticket for each new child's book donated. The books will be donated to libraries and schools in our area.

The Beta Pi Chapter, founded on November 16, 1935, celebrated 80 years in 2015. Women educator members are from Agua Dulce, Alice, and San Diego. O' What a Show is the chapters only fundraiser that affords the chapter to award scholarships to prospective women educators, professional development and continued training. Approximately $10,000 in scholarships has been awarded since 2013.
