Scarecrows and Hobos Welcome:  Harvesting Early Career Educators

Beta Pi's October meeting brought scarecrows and hobos ready to talk about "Harvesting Early Career Educators."

The meeting began with a ceremony of remembrance for member Lois Adams who was a Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Beta Pi Chapter member for 72 years and entered eternal life at the age of 108. The ceremony was led by Kathy Hinojosa and Rosie Delgado.

Adams was initiated into the Beta Pi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International as an active member in 1944. Miss Adams participated in all chapter activities and projects. She served Beta Pi as secretary, scholarship chairman, member of ceremonies committee and World Fellowship. She presented book reviews for chapter meetings. She was granted reserve membership when she was not able to attend meetings.

Miss Adams was recognized several times by Beta Pi. In 1994, the chapter yearbook was dedicated to Miss Adams for her 50 years of membership and recently she was presented a seventy year member pin in June 2015. She was born July 2, 1908 and died September 23, 2016. At the time of her death she was residing in New Braunfels, Texas. Lois was Beta Pi’s longest living member.

First Vice President Yolanda Barrera led a program on "Harvesting Early Career Educators." She gave information on the shortage of teachers and the need to mentor first year teachers. Results of last years mentoring program was also discussed. Members agreed to continue mentoring first year teachers.

As a project, Beta Pi members engaged in hands on activities and crafted two gifts for their mentees. Gifts will be delivered before Halloween and Thanksgiving.

Names were submitted for possible membership. Profiles will be reviewed at the November meeting. Hostesses for the meeting were Veronica Nava, Elva Garcia, and Zelda Saenz.
